I never planned to start this business. I never planned to have my own business at all! I am much more the type who likes to work for other people and get a regular paycheck and leave the headaches of business ownership to others.
But I also never planned on falling in love with this idea to use video to preserve family stories.
Years of working for C-SPAN and Brian Lamb taught me a lot. But most of all, it taught me that each person has a right to an opinion and point of view. My job as a C-SPAN moderator for over 20 years was to LISTEN to caller’s ideas and act as a conduit between them and the Member of Congress or government official who happened to be the guest that day.
Some viewers were and still are critical of the “hold back” attitude of C-SPAN call-in hosts. But the network is very comfortable with our role. We were to ask good questions, facilitate a conversation between the callers and the guests, and stay in the background. The show was not about us. It was about them.
I loved that concept. And I still do. So now, I am just doing interviews instead of call-ins, and I’m recording family stories instead of programs on national political issues.
My goal in starting this business is to expand what I do as a volunteer for my local hospice in Virginia. I hope you will join me in this journey.
The interviews themselves are private and all stories are confidential. Several people have kindly agreed to let me use their Life Story video on this website so you can get a feel for it. I can, however, freely talk about my experiences in the process of making these videos and I hope it will be worthwhile to continue this blog in a written or video form to share with you what it’s like.
